The Pleasure of Gifts

I remember receiving my favourite gift as if it was yesterday... It was my sixth birthday and my Princess Barbie was just the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. She had a sparkling pink ballgown, glass slippers on and diamond earrings (obviously!) glittering under her mane of perfectly styled blonde hair.
I don't think my heart stopped beating like a runaway train all day, and for days and months afterwards just looking at her would make me smile and my heart swell (even despite my hair never got as glossy as hers, no matter how hard I tried).
It's been a while since I was six, but the pleasure and the joy that I get from giving and receiving gifts is still as important to me today as it was all those years ago. I've been blessed to receive treasures ranging from a painted rock (courtesy of my then 3-year old, which still sits on my dressing table today) right through to my diamond earrings form my husband on the birth of my son... quite different price brackets, but both just as priceless to me.
It will never the price tag that makes a gift so special, but the love that goes into if, finding it or making it or planning it - and today I'm fortunate enough to be helping my clients help choose their perfect gifts. And regardless of who they are, what the occasion or how much they want to spend, they all still have the same panic over choosing the perfect present... will they like it? Am I doing the right thing? What if they hate it/me?
What they don't realize is that whatever they give, it will be magical because they are putting their heart and soul into making it perfect. Without that love, a gift is no longer a gift but merely a possession without a story, a history or a Barbie smile to go with it.
